Leaders, members, and staff from unions representing more than 300,000 faculty, adjunct instructors, staff, and graduate workers at colleges and universities around the country met in July 2021 for the Higher Ed Labor Summit: Building a Movement to Transform US Higher Education—a two-day summit meeting to unite around a strategy for transforming higher education. The more than 250 attendees from 75 union locals and labor organizations across a dozen national and international unions developed a a joint platform that sets out a vision of what higher education should look like in the 21st century and action steps for how to achieve it.
At the end of the summit, organizers held a briefing for legislators and the media. Speakers included: Fred Kowal, president of United University Professions, representing faculty and professional staff in the SUNY system; Colena Sesanker, political director of SEIU Congress of Connecticut Community Colleges; Bryan Sacks, vice president of the Part-Time Lecturers Faculty Chapter of Rutgers AAUP-AFT in New Jersey; Jill Penn, co-president of University Campus Workers–Georgia; Santiago Rozo Sánchez, worker organizer with the Washington University Undergraduate and Graduate Workers Union in St. Louis; and Donna Murch, Executive Council member of Rutgers AAUP-AFT. The briefing was moderated by Ian Gavigan, Executive Council member of Rutgers AAUP-AFT.
